Carbon landfill and new carbon emission accounting system

Carbon landfill and new carbon emission accounting system
The carbon landfill in Kaliningrad region will be launched by the end of 2021 as part of the pilot project, Governor Anton Alikhanov said Friday. "Together with BFU (Kant Baltic Federal University) we have selected five sites within the framework of the project for the creation of a carbon landfill. These are the territories of peat bogs, new forest plantations, sea coast and others. They represent the diversity of nature of our region. The researches on carbon sequestration held here could not be rejected by the European Union on the ground that these are some other natural zones, time zones, or anything else," Alikhanov said. The regional authorities are actively cooperating with ministries, industrial partners and the university in order to start researches this year. Russia needs its own carbon emission accounting system. This is how the economy is arranged today, that everyone counts the carbon footprint. And such a system should be scientifically grounded and recognized in the world. Our universities should be responsible for creating such a system. And Kaliningrad region is the first of seven pilot regions where we create such system.
